The National Soil Sampling and Testing Program of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management has started its Phase 2 activities for the remaining 35 provinces which is targeted for completion this year. The nationwide program covering 82 provinces has covered 47 provinces in 2016 for Phase 1.

The Soil Survey Team recently conducted soil investigation and sampling in Benguet Province. They were assisted by Mr. Bren Aliw of the Provincial Agricultural Office and Ms. Julia Mendoza, Municipal Agricultural Technologist of Bakun, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The soil sampling activities were conducted in Brgy. Bagu and Brgy. Poblacion. The soil is clayey, gray and moist. The rice area visited in Brgy. Baguhashas a total of 10 hectares where composite sampling was done through quartering method. Meanwhile, it was documented that Brgy. Poblacion is surrounded by mountainous watersheds with natural springs running down the waterways, which irrigate farm areas.

The topography of these areas made it difficult for the team to conduct said activities because roads were destroyed by landslides, however, the BSWM Team proceeded with its mission despite the condition.

Also, part of the official travel is the documentation of soil testing using Soil Test Kit (STK) by the Soils Laboratory staff in CAR with the assistance of Mr. Diosdado Jose, Regional SWAC CAR. The soil tested were from the samples taken from rice areas in Benguet, still in relation to the NSST program.

Courtesy calls to Mayor Fausto T. Lavinio of Municipality of Bakun and Brgy. Capt. Jose T. Dokipen of Poblacion were also done by the team which is composed of Pol Carandang, Allan Dimaano, Jose Paolo Suministrado, and Renato Cabrera.
