The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), through its Soil and Water Resources Research Division (SWRRD), successfully hosted the Philippine Soil Partnership (PSP) Plenary Assembly on December 4, 2024, at the DA-BSWM Lopez Convention Hall in Quezon City. The assembly brought together representatives from national Government agencies, state universities and colleges, civil society organizations, and private sector stakeholders, all committed to advancing sustainable soil management practices in the Philippines.
In lieu of DA-BSWM Director Gina Parde-Nilo, Ph.D., the event was officiated by Soil Survey Division (SSD) Chief Dante E. Margate, Ph.D., who underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing soil resource challenges. โThe Philippine Soil Partnership serves as a platform for the localized implementation of the Global Soil Partnershipโs five pillars, now referred to as action areas. These action areas focus on protecting and sustainably managing soil resources while addressing pressing issues such as soil degradation, food security, and climate change,โ he emphasized in his welcome remarks.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation and discussion of the Philippine Soil Partnershipโs 2024 achievements and outputs. Members also worked together to outline specific action plans for each focus area and develop a comprehensive PSP Work Plan for Fiscal Year 2025. This collaborative planning process aims to create sustainable strategies that address soil-related challenges within the countryโs socio-economic framework, harmonizing programs under the guidance of the Philippine Technical Panel on Soils.
In addition to fostering stakeholder collaboration, the assembly reinforced the importance of integrating scientific innovation and community engagement. Participants shared insights and best practices, focusing on how research-driven solutions could address regional soil concerns effectively. This ensures the PSP remains aligned with the nation’s agricultural development goals and international commitments to sustainable land use.
By convening this annual assembly, DA-BSWM continues to demonstrate its commitment to leading initiatives that promote the health of the countryโs soil resources, thereby supporting agricultural productivity and resilience against environmental challenges.
