BSWM-ALMED Strengthens Geological Knowledge and Skills Through MGB-Led Training

As part of its commitment to continuous capacity enhancement, the Agricultural Land Management and Evaluation Division (ALMED) of the DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) actively participated in the Training on Basic Mineral and Rock Identification conducted on June 10, 2026, at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Quezon City. The Training aimed to enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills in the proper identification and classification of minerals and rocks through megascopic analysis, which are essential in understanding parent materials that influence soil formation and land resource assessment.

During the activity, experts from the MGB discussed the fundamental principles and techniques in mineral and rock identification, including their physical properties, composition, classification, and significance in geological and soil studies. The training consisted of informative lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on exercises designed to strengthen the participants’ technical competencies in Geology and related fields.

The Training was led by Ms. Ma. Lourdes Stephanie V. Leido, Senior Geologist, with the support of Ms. Armina Yula V. Estanislao, Geologist II; Ms. Shiela Mae Milla, Geologist; Mr. Jan Cedric G. Sisracon, Geologist; Ms. Hannah Fernandez, Geologist; and Ms. Nadine De Guzman, Project Support Officer. Through their expertise and guidance, participants gained valuable insights into the identification, classification, and significance of minerals and rocks in geological and land resource assessments.

As part of the program, the participants were warmly welcomed to the museum, where they were given the opportunity to explore the MGB’s extensive collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, and other geological specimens from various parts of the country. The museum visit provided valuable learning experiences through direct observation and appreciation of the diverse geological resources showcased in the exhibits.

The training served as an excellent opportunity to broaden their understanding of the technical aspects of mineral and rock identification and its relevance to land resource assessment and management. Overall, the activity was highly beneficial and contributed significantly to the enhancement of the participants’ knowledge and practical skills.

The DA-BSWM, through ALMED, remains dedicated to strengthening the technical competencies of its personnel through specialized training and learning opportunities. Such initiatives support the Bureau’s mandate of formulating measures and guidelines for the effective utilization of soil and water resources as vital agricultural resources to attain food security and safety, environmental stability through soil and water resources-based adaptation and mitigation measures that address multi-environmental concerns on land degradation, climate change, and agricultural biodiversity conservation. | via Neil Chester L.
