DA-BSWM Builds Local Capacity in Agri-N Plus Biofertilizer Production

The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), through the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) and the Soil and Water Resources Research Division (SWRRD), successfully conducted the first batch of a two-day Training on Agri-N Plus Production on July 15–16, 2026 in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental. The activity was participated in by Technical Staff from the LGU-Bayawan Agri N Plus and BioCon production teams, respectively.

The Training commenced with an opening program featuring messages from local government officials. The City Agriculturist, Engr. Kenneth S. Artes emphasized the important role of soil and water resources as the foundation of sustainable agriculture and food security. The message also highlighted the importance of expanding soil diagnostic services and expressed their intent and interest to establish the Provincial Soils Laboratory in Bayawan City, which is expected to enhance soil analysis and nutrient management services for farmers in the province.

In his Welcome Message, the City Councilor and Chairman of the Committee on Agri-Fishery proudly shared that the city has been adopting the biofertilizer production technology for over 20 years, a proof of its long-standing commitment to sustainable farming practices. He shared about the significance of maintaining healthy soils for resilient agricultural production and encouraged participants to continue supporting environmentally sound technologies in their respective localities.

The two-day training combined classroom lectures with hands-on laboratory activities, equipping participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed for Agri-N Plus production, quality control, storage and handling, and biofertilizer application. Participants also gained firsthand experience in media preparation, carrier formulation, inoculation techniques, and other essential laboratory procedures. The training was facilitated by the DA-BSWM Technical Team composed of Ms. Jamie Ann B. Tumolva, Ms. Vicky T. Dimaano, Mr. Ariel Lumilay Jr., Mr. Neil Philip Sta. Rosa, and Ms. Valerie Joy A. Valdez.

Headed by the Project Leaders, Dr. Karen S. Bautista, Chief of the Soil and Water Resources Research Division, and Ms. Maribel R. Jalalon, Chief of the Laboratory Services Division, this initiative will empower biofertilizer mixing plants with science-based technologies that support the National Soil Health Program and promote sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture. The same Capacity Building Activity will be conducted in LGU-Davao Del Norte, LGU-Valencia Bukidnon, DA-RFO II Regional Soils Laboratory, and LGU-Toledo Cebu.

By strengthening local capability in biofertilizer production, the BSWM aims to improve soil health, reduce dependence on inorganic fertilizers, and contribute to increased productivity and better livelihoods for Filipino farmers.
