The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) officially turned over 12 Composting Facilities for Biodegradable Wastes – Vermicomposting Technology (CFBW-VT) in the Davao Region on July 27-30, 2026. 

The new facilities provided by DA-BSWM are equipped to process agricultural wastes generated by local farms, including crop residues, vegetable scraps, and other organic materials. Traditionally, these biodegradable wastes would either be burned or left to decompose in an uncontrolled manner, leading to harmful emissions and lost opportunities for nutrient recycling. With the introduction of this composting facility, farmers can now transform waste into valuable compost, ultimately enriching soil health.

The CFBW-VT units were inspected by the BSWM Inspection Team, who were deployed to assess the facilities delivered in the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro and Davao Oriental. The initiative aims to ensure that each composting unit adheres to technical specifications and is ready for full utilization by farmer beneficiaries.

Simultaneous with the inspection was a Level 1 Training on the Proper Operation, Troubleshooting, and Maintenance of CFBW-VT provided by the supplier. This ensured that farmers are well-equipped to utilize the CFBW-VT effectively. Hands-on demonstrations guided on the composting process, worm management, and best practices for applying compost to various crops. This educational component is essential for maximizing the benefits of the CFBW-VT and encouraging widespread adoption of vermicomposting technology among local farmers.

The Inspection and Training is part of BSWM’s broader program to support climate-resilient agriculture and soil health improvement across the country. The agency emphasized that these interventions will not only benefit farmers by reducing input costs through on-site compost production but will also help local government units implement better waste management strategies.

With the successful completion of the inspection and training, the composting units are now officially turned over to local recipients, ready to serve as vital tools in improving farm productivity while addressing environmental concerns.

The Inspection Teams are composed of BSWM technical experts, including Ms. Sharon Elvi Marie Cachopero, Mr. Mark Anthony Paga, Mr. Eddie Bentuzal, and Engr. Michell May Urquiola.
