A concerted effort is underway in Region XI to safeguard vital water resources and foster the adoption of sustainable land management (SLM) practices, with the DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) teaming up with the DA-Regional Field Office XI and the Local Government Unit of Montevista for a project on watershed management of Small Water Impounding Systems (SWIS).

From May 13 to 16, 2025, a collaborative spirit marked the consultations in Montevista, Davao de Oro, as stakeholders aligned on the establishment of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) exemplar sites. The technical staff of the DA-BSWM’s Soil Conservation and Management Division (SCMD), represented by Engr. Josephroel C. Guillermo, Engr. Aliza Nicole B. Andes, and Engr. Jethro M. MiΓ±ano, along with the staff from the Municipal Agriculture Office-Montevista, Mr. Jessryl Orbeta, resonated with the partner farmers of the Linoan Farmers Integrated Cooperative (LIFICO). The team also conducted a courtesy visit to Engr. Hazel May C. Castillon, Engineer IV of the Regional Agricultural Engineering Division (RAED), DA-RFO XI; Engr. Arnold C. Del Pilar, Engineer IV of the Provincial Agriculturist’s Office, and Dr. Victoria B. Jubane, Municipal Agriculturist of Montevista, to discuss the memorandum of agreement and the proposed plans for the project site. This unified approach paved the way for a shared understanding of the farm development plan and a mutual commitment towards the projectβs successful establishment.

Through sustainable land management practices and key interventions like the SWIS Watershed Management Project, the DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), under the leadership of Director Gina Parde-Nilo, Ph.D., and Assistant Director Denise A. Solano, continues its vital work in conserving the country’s soil and water resources.
