As we go towards being adept in Soil Nutrient Mapping, the DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) participated in the Global Soil Nutrient Map (GSNMap) Training Mapping Soil Nutrients and associated Soil Properties by the Food and Agricultural Organization-Global Soil Partnership (FAO-GSP) Secretariat held last 13-17 February 2023 via web conferencing.

This five-day online training was attended by staff from the Geomatics and Soil Information Technology Division (GSITD), Soil Survey Division (SSD), and Agricultural Land Management and Evaluation Division (ALMED).

With the expectations to be more knowledgeable on GSNMap initiatives, to have an enhanced capability in spatial data preparation and harmonization, and deeper knowledge in modelling and mapping of soi nutrients and associated properties, the participants were trained on the following topics:

GSNMap Initiative, Google Earth Engine, R package rgee, Digital Soil Mapping, R Basics, Soil Profile Data Preparation, Environmental Covariates, Spatial Modelling, Mapping Soil Properties with Random Forests, Mapping Soil Nutrients without Coordinates, Step-by-step Modelling and Mapping.

Being the nationally-mandated agency on the sustainable management of soil and water resources for agriculture, the DA-BSWM is into the generation of geospatial data and conduct of geospatial analysis of the agency’s map outputs for agricultural development planning, research, and policy formulation to assist the DA and other stakeholders.
