The hands-on training on the “Operation and Maintenance of Composting Facilities for Biodegradable Wastes (CFBW)” focuses on teaching participants the basic operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of composting facilities using the technology package designed for production of compost and biodegradable waste management.

Held on February 27-28, 2025, at El Vistra Hotel in Angeles City, Pampanga, the event gathered Local Government Units (LGUs), farmer cooperatives, state universities, and other stakeholders from Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Zambales. This equipped the participants with the necessary skills to produce high-quality compost while ensuring efficient waste management practices.

This training is a key component of the CFBW technology package designed to support Republic Act No. 10068 (the Organic Agriculture Act). This Act promotes sustainable practices, such as composting, to improve soil fertility, enhance agricultural productivity, and reduce environmental impact. The program also aligns with Republic Act No. 9003 (the Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act), which focuses on solid waste reduction and promotes composting as an effective waste management solution. Together, these laws provide a solid foundation for implementing composting facilities and advancing environmental sustainability.

The participants learned in-depth composting processes and biodegradable waste shredding techniques, explored best practices for operating composting facilities, discovered methods to optimize the use of organic materials, and reviewed cost-benefit analysis to ensure sustainability and efficiency.

The attendees also visited the Balas Masigasig Farmers Irrigators Association in Brgy. Balas, Mexico, Pampanga, which allowed  them to observe live demonstrations of composting activities, including waste segregation, shredding, substrate mixing, and rotary composter operations.

Aligned with the DA-BSWM’s vision to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship, this training empowers communities with the skills to produce high-quality compost and manage wastes effectively. By equipping CFBW beneficiaries,  the DA-BSWM headed by Director Gina Parde-Nilo, Ph.D. and Assistant Director Denise A. Solano, advances its goal of enhancing soil fertility, boosting agricultural productivity, and reducing environmental impact, and helping create a cleaner, greener future for all. 🌱🌍
