The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), through its Compost Production Implementation Team (CPIT) represented by Mr. Efraim D. Pangadapun, Community Development Officer I (CDO I), conducted a monitoring and inventory of the Composting Facility for Biodegradable Wastes (CFBW) in Surigao del Sur on February 20, 2025.
One notable beneficiary of the program is the Banuison Farmers ng Samahang Walang Iwanan sa Agricultural Organization in Burgos, Cortes, Surigao del Sur. This group, established in 2023, consists of 53 members—46 males and 7 females—who have been actively engaged in composting operations since their facility’s inception.

Using raw materials such as cocopeat, grasses, madre de cacao, rice hulls, rice straw, and animal manure, the organization produces between 400 to 600 kilos of compost per week. They begin their process with 600 to 800 kilos of raw materials and use the composting machine once or twice a month, depending on the availability of members. The finished product is sold for 200 pesos per 40 kilos (1 sack), with some compost being used by members for their own rice fields.

The monitoring visit highlights the significant progress made by the association, which is contributing to both environmental sustainability and local economic growth. With continued support from the DA-BSWM, the DA Regional Field Office XIII, the Local Government Unit through the Municipal Agriculture Office, and the unwavering dedication of the community, the group is making a tangible impact on sustainable farming in the region. Their composting journey is a testament to the power of teamwork and community-driven solutions that bring lasting benefits to all.
In line with Senator Cynthia A. Villar’s advocacy for the local production of organic fertilizers, the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), led by Director Gina P. Nilo, a strong advocate for soil health conservation and water resource management for agriculture, continues to support this initiative. Through the Compost Production Implementation Team (CPIT), the agency aims to assist farmers in utilizing the distributed Composting Facility for Biodegradable Wastes (CFBW) units across the country.
