Soil erosion and the use of chemical fertilizers is an inevitable factor in cultivating sloping areas. These problems can be addressed through adoption of technologies that are appropriate and acceptable to the farmer such as proper tillage and farm residue management.

The research project generally aims to develop cost effective and environment friendly technologies for upland farming that will enhance soil productivity.

Specifically, it aims to

  1. Determine the effectiveness of tillage and crop residue management in minimizing soil erosion
  2. Assess the influence of tillage and residue management on soil quality, and
  3. Determine the impact of crop residue management on farm productivity and profitability
